SEMI-FRIENDS ONLY

Anything fandom related and otherwise innocuous is public. Personal stuff tends to be private.

If we've spoken before or if we have stuff in common and you think you'd like to get to know me, comment to be added.

Back at uni and working hard...

photographic proof of hard work going on )

Seriously, though. I had three exams this week and I'm fairly sure that I didn't completely fail them, which is always good.

Now I'm working on an assignment on the body's response to trauma. Trauma as in the sort of damage caused by RTAs and the like; broken bones, crushed limbs, significant blood loss. What with all the preparation for dissections and revision on reproduction I was doing before Christmas, if the tech guys at halls happen to check what I've been searching, they're going to think I'm one twisted individual.

(Also, I sort of want to write some sort of horrific fic where one of the characters is badly hurt, just so I can use all the stuff I've found out. That's weird, right?)

Also, also, my reaction to the first episode of this series of Being Human, condensed into two words because only two words are necessary: Oh, Nina.

Wow. I am a terrible LJ friend.

I do, however, have a ton of uni work at the moment so I can assure you that it's not intentional.

Hope you guys all had good Christmasses and that the new year has started off happy! Hopefully I can catch up with people soon.

(Also, while I'm here - does anyone have any good suggestions for snake names? I've had the little cornsnake for a month now and I'm still calling it 'the babysnake'. Gender doesn't matter because it's not been sexed, and I call my female beardie by a boy's name anyway :D)

Also, also, Being Human is back soon. I don't have a TV or iPlayer at uni but I'm sure I'll find some way to watch it, even if it means nicking someone else's laptop for an hour. I can't wait!

If a loved one got diagnosed with a painful, terminal illness and asked you to help them terminate their life before they deteriorated, would you do it? If so, would you want to be present during their last moments?

In a heartbeat.

In short, it’s not about you, as the family member and the person watching. It’s about the patient, and doing your best to make things as easy and dignified for them as you can. If they would want you to be there then you be there, even if it is difficult to watch.

... wow. How morbid am I? Sorry about this, guys.

Firstly, halls internet = really annoying. It keeps going down, I keep reporting it and maintenance keep not doing anything to fix it.

Secondly, I still have the babysnake. So far she's shed, eaten twice and got quite friendly. She's a bit hissy but she hasn't bitten me once, which I think counts as a victory. Housekeeping haven't discovered her yet. I really want to keep her! I'm going to try taking her home at Christmas and asking my uncle if he minds looking after one more reptile for me. Haven't named her yet because I was sort of terrified that housekeeping would find her and take her away, but as long as my uncle, who is looking after Norbert for me while I'm in halls this year, is agreeable then it looks like she's here for good. Yay :)

Thirdly, anyone who lives in or near London should go to the Winter Wonderland at Hyde Park. One, ice skating is amazingly fun. Two, after dark all the fairy lights are really, really pretty. Three, there is nothing more Christmas-sy than the smell of mulled wine and roasting chestnuts on cold night air. And four, there is a singing moose head. I don't care if it's cheesy and touristy and all the food is ridiculously overpriced, the singing moose head made my day :D (Also, one of my friends from uni got into an argument with the guy selling the 'therapeutic' salt rock lights and tried to design an experiment to prove that his claims that they could help with arthritis and asthma were incorrect. She actually told him to look it up on PubMed. Funniest thing ever xD)

Also, I'm having a very strange day.

I woke up feeling like the living dead, dragged myself out of bed at about 1pm, got dressed and wandered to the shops to get some painkillers and apples (which is the ultimate hangover cure, btw). While stumbling along in a zombie-ish state, I heard cheering coming from near the station. I turned the corner and there were several hundred santas standing around outside the World's End, drinking Carlsberg and shouting 'Merry Christmas' at passers by. A lot of them wanted me to high five them. Most of them were slightly drunk. In the supermarket, there were a load more of them buying alcohol and peanuts.

What. The. Hell?

Got up at 3pm today. Got dressed. Wandered to Sainsburys. Saw Ralf Little. Bought Chocolate. Came home and had this conversation on the phone:

A guy from my uni -"Are we meeting at Cat's tonight?"
Me - "Yep."
"Where does she live?"
"Next door to me."
"Where do you live?"
"You know where. You came back to mine after Black Cap last Sunday."
"... I went to yours after Black Cap?"
"Um, yeah. You stayed for a few hours and fell asleep on the stairs, remember?"
"Um... no. I just remember waking up on a train at Uxbridge the next morning with a bag of puke and no idea where I was."

Ah, university.

Also, I'm looking out for a dongle I can afford. Thinking about getting the vodafone pay as you go one. Because I miss being able to read fic that my uni would disapprove of, damnit!

I'm going home tomorrow!

Despite the state of the underground (Tfl doesn't want anyone going through East London this weekend, it seems =/) I have figured out a way to get home. I'll be there for a week because the glorious, blessed thing that is Consolidation Week has arrived. I have one 1000 word essay to write and I have to read and analyse one paper, so I think I've got off pretty lightly.

I'm looking forward to a week of sleep, my brother's surprisingly good cooking and, most importantly, an unlimited download limit! For some reason BBC iPlayer isn't working on my computer at halls, which means I have no TV and no means on catching up on what I've missed, which is VERY. BAD. Hopefully I'm going to get a dongle in the next week which means that I will be able to watch TV on websites of debatable legality, read fic with a rating higher than PG and generally surf what I want to without wondering if uni is going to deep it "inappropriate for a university network" and take away my internet. And I get to see Jess, Bobby, Norbert and the guinea pigs. Yay!

(Also, I've signed up for NaNoWriMo. I wasn't planning on doing it but two days ago a novel literally popped into my head practically fully formed. I actually have everything worked out. And it's interesting. And I want to write it. So I'm going to give it a go and see how I get on. I'VE GONE MAD, HAVEN'T I?)

I swear I'll catch up with you all in the next week, f-listies! I feel so out of touch! =(

I am actually alive, just to let you know.

I moved into halls okay. This is the end of my third week of uni and I love it.

My room is pretty nice, actually. Apart from the fact that the data port for the internet was broken when I moved in, and it was only fixed at five o'clock today, so this is the first time I've been able to use the internet.

I don't have a TV and without iPlayer, I'm very, very behind on fandom-y stuff. It will probably take me a while to catch up on my flist, too. But I'm alive, I'm having a good time and I have actually written some stuff since I've been here, which I will get around to posting at some point.

I've missed you all, these past few weeks!

:/

The girls went to my mum's today. I spent the whole afternoon setting their cage up in her spare room. I miss them already.

They're long haired and light coloured, so they need a lot of grooming and attention to make sure that they don't get tangles or look all dirty. And while Maisy is very sweet and amiable, Daisy (the one on the left in my userpic) is an irritable little thing. If she doesn't like something she has been known to bite 'till you bleed and she has the unfortunate habit of peeing all over you if she sits on your lap for any length of time. Clearly, my mum is going to have a brilliant time looking after them.

... Actually, maybe I should have warned her about the peeing thing.

On the plus side, I've packed my clothes now. And they all fit into one suitcase! I'm deeply shocked. Maybe my stuff will fit into the Fiesta after all.

In an attempt to get writing again, I am signing up for[info]spn_30snapshots. Oddly enough, SPN is the only fandom I seem to get fic ideas for at the moment. Wish me luck!

I haven't been around for the last week or so. Sorry about that!

The reason why? Technology hates me.

About a year ago, my laptop went kaput. I had to pay a stupid amount of money to get it fixed. About six months ago, it went again. My brother got one of his mates to replace a faulty part. A few weeks ago, it died again and is such a mess that I've been told it would be easier and cheaper to just dump it and get a new laptop rather than try to get everything faulty replaced. Ever since then, I've been nicking my brother's laptop while he's at work to write and come online. Yesterday, that died too.

When I take into account the two iPods and countless cheap, ASDA mp3 players, two Sony Ericsson mobiles, several scientific calculators, an oven and a microwave which have all mysteriously stopped working, broken or blown up in the past couple of years, I am forced to conclude that electrical appliances just die screaming at my touch.

FIC!
WHAT IS THIS? FIC?!

Don't have a heart attack, but I've actually written something! Mon frere got me season 1 of Supernatural on DVD, I watched 'Asylum' and this is what happened.

FYI; this is my first piece of writing for about ten months, first SPN fic and first fic in an American fandom so this is probably awful. I'm going to go and hide now, okay?

Title: Guns
Fandom: Supernatural
Author: andthedescent
Genre: Gen
Rating: PG-13, possibly? I'm terrible at rating things. But there is a bit of violence which results (understandably) in bad language.
Warnings: Spoilers for 'Asylum'. Also unbeta'd. You should probably be warned about that.
Word Count: ~700
Summary: Dean has been handling weapons for as long as he can remember.

this way to the fic )

:D

I have somewhere to li-ive. I have somewhere to li-ive!

Okay, it's in halls of residence. Okay, it's a pokey little room with shared bathroom and kitchen facilities... But it's away from home and it will be my own little space with no family members breathing down the back of my neck and it's in the coolest part of London ever.

I'm so happy!

I didn't think I was going to get it, to be honest. Firstly, I don't live that far away from the uni. I mean, it would be an expensive and tedious commute every day if I was living at home, but it would be possible. And secondly, I sent my application for accomodation in really, really late. And by late, I mean over a month later than the deadline. To be fair, I did have a reason, given what else was going on at the time. I maybe played on that a little when I was on the phone to the university and Student Finance, with the result that I now have somewhere to live and have been promised that Student Finance will do their very best to get me re-means tested very quickly so that I have money to start uni with.

Given that a month ago things were so messy that I thought I'd have to decline my place and try again next year, things have come together surprisingly well. Yay :D

Now all I have to do is get all the things that I will need, including a new laptop (mine finally died a death a little while ago; now it won't actually turn on), bedding, some cutlery and glasses and such, stationary and whatever else I might need, then work out what clothes I will be taking, pack everything and be ready to move in 24 days, without the help of ether of my brothers who will both be on holiday when I move in.

Easy peasy :)

... I want to go back. Newquay is awesome.

The campsite was good. The weather was good. The surf was good. The festival was good.

I'm embarassingly bad at surfing, but I had a lot of fun trying anyway. At one point I got dragged out by the current and had to beg a very hot surfer man to help me back towards the shore, but I'm quite happy to forget about that little mishap. I went to a lot of bars, a lot of clubs, got chatted up by a Fratelli, took part in impromptu raves and had a very long, very serious discussion about the possibility of time travel with a very, very stoned guy on a bus in the early hours of the morning. All in all, a good trip.

Also, Calvin Harris is pretty amazing live, as were Super Furry Animals once they got going. I'm not a particularly big fan of The Streets or Cypress Hill but they were pretty good. Dan le Sac vs Scroobius Pip were hilarious. I was very impressed by the Telegraphs, too.

Also, remember the very attractive guy who was lending me his surfboard? He got scouted by a male modelling company on the second day and was insufferably smug for the rest of the week. If he now becomes a superstar, I am going to be one of those sad people who tells anyone who will listen that I knew him before he was famous.

Back to the usual routine now. Piglet died while I was away and now Patch is pining for him. There's loads of Dad's stuff to sort out and I've had to cancel Sky TV because it was too expensive, so no more Animal Planet :( Still, it's warm and sunny and I have an awesome tan so things can't be all bad here.

Happy birthday, [info]dodochicky ! I'm 62 minutes late, sorry. Hope you had a fantastic day!

Sorry that I've been so out of touch with my flist lately. Unfortunately I probably won't get the chance to catch up for a while. Dad's funeral is tomorrow, then I've got to get a tent and a sleeping bag from somewhere and pack for an eight hour drive to Newquay at the weekend, ready for Relentless Boardmasters next week.

Hope you're all having a good summer.

I went to the MCM London Expo yesterday and it was awesome. I forgot about part of the DLR being down so I ended up walking a lot of the way, but it was a lovely day so it was actually quite nice. Outside Poplar I was treated to the sight of a train load of cosplayers wandering around lost, while construction workers looked on and took pictures. Good times!

I finally got in at about 10.45 and had a quick look inside before going to meet [info]gnimaerd

I think we watched just about every panel there was, including the ones for Franklyn and Moon which look pretty cool. I want to see them. The closer to one o'clock it got, the more fangirls appeared in the seating area. And finally it was time for the Merlin panel!

What scientific or medical breakthrough do you most want to happen in your lifetime?

iPs cells which are not made using retroviruses, will not cause cancer and will have their use carefully regulated. Because dude, think of all the things you could do with that technology - all the damaged and diseased cells which could be replaced with new, healthy cells which wouldn't be rejected by the body.

Well, that and 'cold' fusion. 'Cause that would be awesome.

Look at me, I'm such a geek.
